The Tobiatic trip was amazing. With 24 portages in 6 days, I think I am ready for the NFCT.
We did not see another person for 6 days along the water trail.
This was a great test trip for me and the boat. The water was littered with boulders, so we had plenty of practice avoiding obstacles, and the portage trails were more like rabbit trails we were bushwhacking most of the way. This will make the NFCT portage roads and trails look easy. We also had some good practice with planning provisions. I have to admit the food back weighed more than the canoe (39lb of Kevlar) for the first couple of days. Unlike the NFCT, the Tobiatic Wilderness is just that - Wilderness. Not opportunities for re-provisioning. This should be a good example for the Allagash.
Now that the boat is broken in, we are really ready. I did have to put a few canoe gear items on my shopping list. Unlike the kayaks, the canoe is better with big packs that can be quickly transitioned to a backpack from boat ballast.
